Shot Put, Discus, Javelin: Meters to Feet Chart

A 50.00 m discus throw is 164' 0" on a high school results sheet, and a 131' 0" throw measured with a tape is 39.92 m in college. Throws round down harder than jumps: NFHS records the discus and javelin to the lesser whole inch, and World Athletics records every throw to the centimeter below. The charts apply those rules, and the implement table underneath is the reason a throw only compares with a throw of the same implement.

The two rounding rules

NFHS Rule 6-6-11 for the discus and Rule 6-8-12 for the javelin say the measurement is recorded to the nearest lesser inch, or to the even-numbered centimeter below it when the meet measures in metric. World Athletics Technical Rule 32.19 says every throwing event is recorded to the 0.01 m below the measured distance whenever the distance is not a whole centimeter, and NCAA and USATF meets record to the next lowest full centimeter as well.

So a 15.00 m shot put, which is 49' 2.55", is written as 49' 2" on a high school sheet, and a 164' 1" discus throw, which is 50.0126 m, is written as 50.01 m at a college meet. Every cell in the charts below is rounded that way: metric to imperial down to the whole inch, imperial to metric down to the centimeter.

The shot put recording rule sits in a different NFHS rule, 6-5, which is not reproduced in the source used here; the shot put chart applies the same lesser-inch presentation as the discus and javelin, and says so.

Why the implement matters more than the units

A distance only means something next to the weight that was thrown. The shot changes with every step up for boys and stays at 4 kg for girls from high school onward, which is the single biggest reason a boy's high school throw does not transfer to the college shot put standards and a girl's does transfer to the women's standards.

Those weights are from the USATF specification sheet based on the 2024 Competition Rules. The discus standards and javelin standards pages carry the same caution for their implements, and what is a good shot put distance reads the shot ranges by grade with the weight change built in. A sheet that shows NM or FOUL instead of a distance is decoded in track meet abbreviations.

A throw that is not on the chart

The meters to feet and inches converter and the feet and inches to meters converter take any distance. Throws are not wind-read, so there is no wind adjustment to make, but a throw that lands outside the sector is a foul at every level and no conversion revives it.
