Before you compare yourself to anything below, check which implement you have been throwing. This is the event where that question changes the answer the most.
Every published band for the girls Shot Put sits between 55' 9.25" (17.00m) and 32' 9.5" (10.00m). Anything inside that window puts you in a real conversation with some division. Below it, the honest read is that you need a season of improvement before a coach's recruiting filter surfaces you at all, and plenty of athletes close exactly that gap in one year.
NCAA Division I publishes the widest band of the four for this event, which means the gap between its fastest recruits and its last roster spot is unusually large. A mark near the bottom of that band is a conversation, not a commitment.
Girls and women both throw the 4 kilogram shot. The implement does not change at all between high school and college, so your distance transfers directly and a coach can read it at face value. That makes this one of the cleanest marks a girl can put on a recruiting profile.
Contested indoors with the same implement and the same rules, so indoor and outdoor shot put marks are directly comparable.
There is no wind rule in this event. No reading can make the mark illegal, which is one reason coaches like recruiting off it: the number you ran or threw is simply the number.
Walk-on conversations in the girls Shot Put usually start at the bottom of the Division III and NAIA ranges: NCAA Division III 36' 1" (11.00m) and NAIA 32' 9.5" (10.00m) (published bottoms, not a walk-on standard). Programs vary: a roster spot at one school is a no at another with the same mark, and a coach who has seen the race behind the number is the one who says yes.
Boys shot put (12 lb): state 12.95m to 15.78m, D1 16.00m to 20.20m (16 lb). Girls (4 kg): state 9.67m to 11.79m, D1 13.00m to 17.00m. Published 2026 marks.
