Hurdle Heights and Spacing: Youth, HS, NCAA, WA
September 1, 2026 路 7 min read
Boys' hurdles get taller at every step up, from 30 inches at age 11 to 42 inches in college. Girls' hurdles reach 33 inches in high school and never change again. The spacing between the hurdles is the same at a state meet as it is in an Olympic final. Every height, spacing and hurdle count below is transcribed from the rule codes, with the metric and imperial figures each code actually prints.
Sprint hurdles: 80m, 100m and 110m
| Level | Race | Hurdles | Height | To first hurdle | Between hurdles | Last hurdle to finish |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| USATF youth 11-12, boys and girls | 80m | 8 | 30" (0.762 m) | 12.00 m | 7.50 m | 15.50 m |
| USATF youth 13-14, girls | 100m | 10 | 30" (0.762 m) | 13.00 m | 8.50 m | 10.50 m |
| USATF youth 13-14, boys | 100m | 10 | 33" (0.840 m) | 13.00 m | 8.50 m | 10.50 m |
| USATF youth 15-18, girls | 100m | 10 | 33" (0.840 m) | 13.00 m | 8.50 m | 10.50 m |
| USATF youth 15-18, boys | 110m | 10 | 39" (0.991 m) | 13.72 m | 9.14 m | 14.02 m |
| High school girls (NFHS) | 100m | 10 | 33" (0.838 m) | 13.00 m | 8.50 m | 10.50 m |
| High school boys (NFHS) | 110m | 10 | 39" (0.991 m) | 13.72 m | 9.14 m | 14.02 m |
| World Athletics U18 girls | 100m | 10 | 30" (0.762 m) | 13.00 m | 8.50 m | 10.50 m |
| World Athletics U18 boys | 110m | 10 | 36" (0.914 m) | 13.72 m | 9.14 m | 14.02 m |
| World Athletics U20 men | 110m | 10 | 39" (0.991 m) | 13.72 m | 9.14 m | 14.02 m |
| College women (NCAA), World Athletics women and U20 women | 100m | 10 | 33" (0.838 m) | 13.00 m | 8.50 m | 10.50 m |
| College men (NCAA) and World Athletics men | 110m | 10 | 42" (1.067 m) | 13.72 m | 9.14 m | 14.02 m |
Two metric figures appear for the same 33 inch barrier because 33 inches is 0.8382 m: World Athletics prints 0.838 m and the USATF specification sheet prints 0.840 m. It is one hurdle. World Athletics allows a manufacturing tolerance of 3 mm above and below every standard height, and accepts hurdles up to 1.000 m in the U20 110m hurdles.

Indoor: 55m and 60m hurdles
| Level | Race | Hurdles | Height | To first hurdle | Between hurdles | Last hurdle to finish |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| High school girls (NFHS) | 55m | 5 | 33" (0.838 m) | 13.00 m | 8.50 m | 8.00 m |
| High school boys (NFHS) | 55m | 5 | 39" (0.991 m) | 13.72 m | 9.14 m | 4.72 m |
| College women (NCAA) and World Athletics women | 60m | 5 | 33" (0.838 m) | 13.00 m | 8.50 m | 13.00 m |
| College men (NCAA) and World Athletics men | 60m | 5 | 42" (1.067 m) | 13.72 m | 9.14 m | 9.72 m |
Indoors the spacing is the outdoor spacing cut off after the fifth hurdle, which is why a 60m hurdles time is the first honest read a college coach gets on whether a high school boy can clear the taller barrier at speed.
What the table means for a recruit
The boys' barrier moves 30, 33, 39, 42. The step from high school to college is three inches on all ten hurdles, and the approach and spacing do not change to compensate. That is why a boy's 110m hurdles time is read against the college 110m hurdles standards as evidence of potential rather than as a finished mark: flat 100m speed and touchdown rhythm carry over, the raw time does not.
The girls' barrier stops at 33 inches. A high school girl races exactly the hurdle, spacing and approach she will race in college, so her time is directly readable against the college 100m hurdles standards with no adjustment.
In the long hurdles the barrier is already at its adult height in high school, 36 inches for boys and 30 for girls. What changes at the next level is the distance, 300m to 400m, the count, eight hurdles to ten, and a 40 m run to the line instead of 10 m. Nobody publishes a conversion between the two races.
Sprint hurdles are wind-read events. A trailing wind above +2.0 m/s makes the time wind-aided, wind-legal marks explained covers what that does to a ranking, and the wind calculator shows what a reading is worth. A hand-timed hurdles race is a different number again; hand timing versus FAT and the hand time to FAT tool explain the gap. The indoor rows above assume a 200m track; indoor track sizes covers what else changes under a roof.
How a hurdle is built
World Athletics Technical Rule 22 also fixes the hurdle itself: 1.18 m to 1.20 m wide, a base no longer than 0.70 m, a total weight of at least 10 kg, a top bar 70 mm high (plus or minus 5 mm) and 10 mm to 25 mm thick, and counterweights set so that a horizontal force equal to the weight of between 3.6 kg and 4 kg at the center of the top bar is needed to tip it. Hitting a hurdle is not a foul; deliberately knocking one down with a hand, or trailing a foot or leg below the top of the bar as you pass it, is.

I transcribed every row from those three documents. The NFHS rules book is a paid publication, so the high school rows here are taken from the officials' cross-code comparison and checked against the high school rows of the USATF specification sheet; the two agree on every number printed. Where a source was silent, the row is left out rather than filled in, which is why there is no USATF youth boys' 400m hurdles row.
