Girls 400m Hurdles recruiting standards, fully automatic timing: D1 58.50 to 1:01.50, D2 1:00.00 to 1:08.00, D3 1:01.00 to 1:12.00, NAIA 1:04.00 to 1:14.00. The top of a range is where scholarship conversations get realistic. The bottom is roughly where that division stops recruiting, though walk-on routes exist everywhere.

Most recruits arrive at this page with no 400m hurdles mark at all, and that is normal rather than a problem.
Every published band for the girls 400m Hurdles sits between 58.50 and 1:14.00. Anything inside that window puts you in a real conversation with some division. Below it, the honest read is that you need a season of improvement before a coach's recruiting filter surfaces you at all, and plenty of athletes close exactly that gap in one year.
NCAA Division III publishes the widest band of the four for this event, which means the gap between its fastest recruits and its last roster spot is unusually large. A mark near the bottom of that band is a conversation, not a commitment.
American high schools contest the 300m hurdles, not the 400m. College contests the 400m. The barrier height is the same at both levels, 36 inches for boys and men and 30 inches for girls and women, so what changes is the distance and the count: eight barriers in the high school 300m, ten in the college 400m. Coaches recruit this event off a 300m hurdles time read alongside a flat 400m, so post both. If you own a rare 400m hurdles mark from a national meet or a club season, it will do more work than either.
Not contested indoors at any level. There is no indoor equivalent, so your outdoor season is the only window in which this mark exists.
There is no wind rule in this event. No reading can make the mark illegal, which is one reason coaches like recruiting off it: the number you ran or threw is simply the number.
Walk-on conversations in the girls 400m Hurdles usually start at the bottom of the Division III and NAIA ranges: NCAA Division III 1:12.00 and NAIA 1:14.00 (published bottoms, not a walk-on standard). Programs vary: a roster spot at one school is a no at another with the same mark, and a coach who has seen the race behind the number is the one who says yes.
An honest guide to picking an event: what each one really demands, why the 400m breaks people, and which events are quietly desperate for athletes.
Boys 400m: varsity 51.54 to 53.14, state 49.17 to 52.50, D1 46.10 to 49.00. Girls: state 57.23 to 1:02.82, D1 52.20 to 57.00. Published 2026 times, FAT.
