## How coaches actually read this event

Before you compare yourself to anything below, check which implement you have been throwing. This is the event where that question changes the answer the most.

## Reading the numbers above

Every published band for the boys Shot Put sits between **66' 3.25" (20.20m)** and **38' 4.5" (11.70m)**. Anything inside that window puts you in a real conversation with some division. Below it, the honest read is that you need a season of improvement before a coach's recruiting filter surfaces you at all, and plenty of athletes close exactly that gap in one year.

NAIA publishes the widest band of the four, which is usually why it is the landing spot for athletes who develop late or who came to the event from another sport.

## What changes between high school and college

High school boys throw a 12 pound shot. NCAA men throw 16 pounds. That is a third more weight in the hand, and it is the reason a boy's high school distance does not carry across to a college roster at face value. A coach reading your mark already knows which implement produced it, so post the mark honestly and do not adjust it yourself. If you have ever thrown the 16 pound implement at a national or club meet, that mark is worth far more to a recruiter than a longer 12 pound throw.

## Indoor, outdoor and wind

Contested indoors with the same implement and the same rules, so indoor and outdoor shot put marks are directly comparable.

There is no wind rule in this event. No reading can make the mark illegal, which is one reason coaches like recruiting off it: the number you ran or threw is simply the number.

## Walk-on

Walk-on conversations in the boys Shot Put usually start at the bottom of the Division III and NAIA ranges: NCAA Division III 39' 4.25" (12.00m) and NAIA 38' 4.5" (11.70m) (published bottoms, not a walk-on standard). Programs vary: a roster spot at one school is a no at another with the same mark, and a coach who has seen the race behind the number is the one who says yes.
