# Girls 400m recruiting standards

> Girls 400m standards: D1 52.20 to 57.00, D2 54.90 to 59.60, D3 55.60 to 1:01.30, NAIA 56.80 to 59.60, FAT. Source cited, checked August 12, 2026.

Girls 400m recruiting standards, fully automatic timing: D1 52.20 to 57.00, D2 54.90 to 59.60, D3 55.60 to 1:01.30, NAIA 56.80 to 59.60. The top
of a range is where scholarship conversations get realistic. The bottom is roughly where that
division stops recruiting, though walk-on routes exist everywhere.

| Division | Top of range | Bottom of range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| NCAA Division I | 52.20 | 57.00 |
| NCAA Division II | 54.90 | 59.60 |
| NCAA Division III | 55.60 | 1:01.30 |
| NAIA | 56.80 | 59.60 |

These vary by program and conference, so use them to orient yourself rather than to rule
yourself out. ## How coaches actually read this event

The 400m is the event with the least hiding in it. It is long enough that a good start cannot carry the race and short enough that pacing errors show up immediately, so the time is a close read on actual fitness. Coaches also recruit the 400m as a feeder into the 4x400, which every program needs filled, and that widens the range of times worth a conversation.

## Reading the numbers above

Every published band for the girls 400m sits between **52.20** and **1:01.30**. Anything inside that window puts you in a real conversation with some division. Below it, the honest read is that you need a season of improvement before a coach's recruiting filter surfaces you at all, and plenty of athletes close exactly that gap in one year.

NCAA Division III publishes the widest band of the four for this event, which means the gap between its fastest recruits and its last roster spot is unusually large. A mark near the bottom of that band is a conversation, not a commitment.

## What changes between high school and college

Unchanged from high school to college.

## Indoor, outdoor and wind

Contested indoors as two laps of a 200m track, which means four bends instead of two. Indoor 400m times are slower than outdoor times as a rule, and are read on their own scale.

There is no wind rule in this event. No reading can make the mark illegal, which is one reason coaches like recruiting off it: the number you ran or threw is simply the number.

## Walk-on

Walk-on conversations in the girls 400m usually start at the bottom of the Division III and NAIA ranges: NCAA Division III 1:01.30 and NAIA 59.60 (published bottoms, not a walk-on standard). Programs vary: a roster spot at one school is a no at another with the same mark, and a coach who has seen the race behind the number is the one who says yes.
