# Is your boys 400m time good? Rate it against every level

> Rate your boys 400m time: the college level it reaches (NAIA, D3, D2, D1), the gap to the next level, and where it ranks on the live board. Free, no account.

your time below and this page places it on that ladder, measures the gap to the next range, and
shows where it would sit among the boys 400m marks ranked on TrackReels.

## The levels for the boys 400m

| Level | Top of range | Bottom of range |

| NCAA Division II | 47.40 | 50.10 |
| NCAA Division III | 47.90 | 52.00 |

| Below the college ranges | Slower than 52.00. This page measures that gap for you. | |

## What the verdict means

**Top of a range** means your time is at or beyond the reach mark of that division: the kind of
time a competitive program in that division recruits. **Inside a range** means a roster
conversation is realistic there. **Below the college ranges** is where most high-school
athletes start, and the page tells you exactly how far the first range is, so the number to
chase is a specific one rather than a feeling.

A range is not a cut-off. Programs inside one division vary enormously, and a time at the bottom
of a band at one school is a scholarship conversation at another. Use the verdict to decide which
division to spend your time on.

## Questions athletes ask

### What is a good boys 400m time in high school?

A time inside any published college range is a recruitable high-school time: from 52.00
(NCAA Division III) upward. 49.00 reaches the bottom of the Division I range and
46.10 its top. The guide [Good 400m Times by Level: Rate Your Time](https://trackreels.io/blog/what-is-a-good-400m-time) walks through the real numbers by level.

### Does a hand time count?

The ranges are fully automatic times. Add 0.24 to a hand time before rating it, the standard
high-school conversion, or use the [hand time to FAT converter](https://trackreels.io/convert/hand-time-to-fat).
Wind matters too: a sprint or horizontal jump with more than 2.0 m/s of tailwind is not a legal
mark, whatever the clock says.

### Where do the ranges come from?

Source: [Streamline Athletes published recruitment standards](https://blog.streamlineathletes.com/track-and-field-college-recruitment-standards-what-performances-do-i-need-to-go-to-my-dream-school/), checked 2026-08-12, cross-checked against Fast Track Recruiting (D1 tables). These are published by a recruiting service, not by the NCAA. They vary by program and conference, so treat them as orientation rather
than a gate.
