# Indoor Track Time Converter: Flat vs Banked

> Convert indoor times between flat, undersized and banked tracks with the NCAA's published conversion factors, men's and women's, 200m to 5000m.

**Multiply your time by the NCAA's published factor for your event, gender and direction: a men's 4:20.00 mile on a flat 200m track counts as 4:16.72 banked (factor 0.9874).**

Convert an indoor time between flat, undersized and banked or oversized tracks using the NCAA's own published factors. Pick the event, the track your race was on, and the track you want the equivalent for.

## Worked example

A flat-track mile of **4:20.00** converts to **4:16.72** on a banked or oversized track. Men's Mile, flat 200m to banked/oversized: factor 0.9874 from the NCAA chart. The converted time is faster, because the target track is faster. Enter your own time above for yours.

## When you need this

Indoor tracks are not equal. A banked 200m track runs fast; a flat 200m track is slower through every turn; an undersized track slower again. The NCAA published exact factors for moving a time between them and used those factors for its own qualifying lists through the 2025-26 season; from 2026-27 the Division I oversight committee has stopped applying them to qualifying (see the last question below), but the factors still describe what a flat or undersized track costs, so a 4:10 flat-track mile and a 4:10 banked mile remain different performances. This tool applies the official chart, both genders, 200m through 5000m and the relays.

## Where the factors come from

These are the NCAA's own conversion factors, published in the
[NCAA Indoor Conversion Charts (USTFCCCA)](https://www.ustfccca.org/assets/NCAA-Indoor-Track-Size-Conversion-Charts.pdf)
and used on the national qualifying lists since 2012-13. Converted time = your time
multiplied by the factor for your event, gender and track pair. Banked 200m and oversized
tracks count as one category, because the NCAA's research found no statistical difference
between them.

The size of the correction falls as the race gets longer, since turn mechanics matter most at
200m pace, and the men's factors are slightly larger than the women's at every distance.
There is no published conversion TO an undersized track, so this tool refuses that direction
rather than inventing one.

Multiply your time by the factor. Below 1 means the converted time is faster.

## Then find out what the mark is worth

Converting is the easy half. The number only means something next to a standard, so this
tool also places your converted mark against published NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA
recruiting ranges for your event and gender, and tells you which of them are realistic. No
other converter does that, and it is the reason to run yours here.

A converted mark is for comparing, not for claiming. Once you know where it sits, the
useful next step is putting the race itself on a profile so a coach can watch it rather than
take your word for the number.

## Common questions

### What is a flat track in indoor track and field?

A 200m indoor track with unbanked, level turns. Flat turns force more deceleration than banked ones, so times run on flat tracks convert FASTER when moved to a banked equivalent. Most high school and many college facilities are flat 200m tracks.

### Do banked and oversized tracks convert differently?

No. The NCAA's research found no statistical difference between performances on a banked 200m track and an oversized track of 300m or more, so its chart treats them as one category.

### Which direction do the factors work?

Converted time = your time multiplied by the published factor. Moving from a slower track to a faster one multiplies by a factor below 1, so the converted time is faster; banked-to-flat factors are above 1. There is no published conversion TO an undersized track, so this tool refuses that direction.

### Does the NCAA actually use these conversions?

Yes. Since 2012-13 the qualifying lists convert marks from flat and undersized tracks with exactly these factors, which is why a flat-track athlete can out-qualify a banked-track athlete with a slower raw time.

### Does the NCAA still use these conversions for qualifying?

Not from the 2026-27 academic year. At its June 22-23, 2026 meeting the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Oversight Committee voted to eliminate track-size conversions for indoor track and field, and altitude conversions for indoor and outdoor, when it selects championship fields. The factors on this page still describe the difference between the tracks; the NCAA no longer applies them to its qualifying lists.
