US high school cross country races 5 kilometers, and the 5000m is also a track event, but plenty of results sheets, older records and English courses are still posted at 3 miles. ## Common questions

### Is a 5K the same as 3 miles?

No. Three miles is 4828.032m and a 5000m is 5000m, so the 5K is about 172m longer, roughly a further 35 seconds at 17-minute pace. Anyone treating them as the same number is overstating a 3 mile time or understating a 5K.

### Does this work for a cross country 5K?

For the distance, yes. For the performance, treat it with caution: this is a pure distance ratio and it knows nothing about the course. A cross country 5K on hills, grass and mud is a different effort from 5000m on a track, and no governing body publishes a conversion between them.

### Do colleges race 5K in cross country?

No. NCAA cross country races 10,000m for Division I and II men, 8,000m for Division III men, and 6,000m for women at every division. The 5K is a high school distance, which is one reason a high school cross country time does not map cleanly onto a college recruiting standard.
