# Is 11.5 a Good 100m Time? Rate Yours by Level

> For a girl 11.5 is inside the D1 recruiting range. For a boy it is not a recruiting mark. Hand-timed, it is really an 11.74. The full ladder, D1 to NAIA.

**The verdict, before anything else.** All times fully automatic (FAT); if yours was hand-timed, round up to the next tenth and add 0.24 first: an 11.5 hand time is an 11.74.

**Rate your 100m time.** Type your time into the box on this page and see which college level it reaches, how far the next one is, and where it would sit on the live board. If the box is not showing, open the [100m rating tool](https://trackreels.io/rate/100m/M) for boys or the [girls version](https://trackreels.io/rate/100m/F).

| 100m (FAT) | For a boy | For a girl |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 10.50 | Inside the D1 recruiting range (10.30 to 10.80) | Faster than the listed womens ranges |
| 10.75 | Inside the D1 range | Faster than the listed ranges |
| 11.00 | D2 range (10.60 to 11.20) | Faster than the listed ranges |
| 11.25 | D3/NAIA range (10.90 to 11.40) | Faster than the D1 top (11.40) |
| **11.50** | **Below the published college ranges** | **Inside the D1 range (11.40 to 12.00)** |
| 11.75 | Below the ranges | D1 range |
| 12.00 | Below the ranges | Bottom of the D1 range, inside D2 (11.80 to 12.80) |
| 12.25 | Below the ranges | D2/NAIA range |
| 12.50 | Below the ranges | D2 range; NAIA (12.10 to 12.80) |

"Below the published college ranges" is not an insult: most varsity sprinters live there. It means the number itself will not start a college conversation; the ranges are from the published [college recruiting standards](https://trackreels.io/standards/100m/M), same source as every table on this site.

Short answer, because you came here for one.

For a **high school girl, 11.5 is excellent.** It sits inside the published NCAA Division I recruiting range, which runs from about 11.40 at the top to 12.00 at the bottom. Run 11.5 on a legal wind with proper timing and college coaches will want to talk to you.

For a **high school boy, 11.5 is solid but not a recruiting mark.** The published D3 range bottoms out around 11.40, so 11.5 sits just underneath the college bands. That is not a verdict on you, it is a statement about where four-year programs start looking.

## The number on its own is not the whole answer

Three things change what 11.5 means, and all three are on your result slip.

**Wind.** Anything over +2.0 meters per second is wind-aided. It still happened, but it will not count for rankings or for most recruiting conversations. An 11.5 with +3.1 is not an 11.5.

**Timing.** A hand time and a fully automatic time are not the same measurement. The standard conversion is to round up to the next tenth and then add 0.24 for sprints. A hand-timed 11.5 is closer to a FAT 11.74, and that gap matters enormously at this level.

**Where in the season.** An 11.5 in March is a different signal from an 11.5 in June. Coaches read your progression before your best.

## About "average for a 14 year old"

You have probably searched something like that. Here is the thing nobody else will tell you: **there is no official national average time by age, for any event.** No governing body publishes one. Meet results live in fifty separate state systems, and none of them record the kids who never made a varsity final, so any "average" you find has quietly excluded most of the population it claims to describe.

When a page confidently tells you the average 100m time for a 14 year old is some exact number, that number was invented, or it was averaged from whatever results the author could scrape, which is a very different thing.

The question that actually helps you is not "am I average". It is **"what am I close to, and what would the next step take"**. That has a real answer, because college recruiting ranges are published.

## What to do with this

Put your mark next to the published ranges rather than an imaginary average. You can check any time or distance against every division on the [standards page](https://trackreels.io/standards), which will tell you which band you are in and what the next one asks for. The full 100m ladder, D1 through NAIA, is laid out for [boys](https://trackreels.io/standards/100m/M) and [girls](https://trackreels.io/standards/100m/F).

Then work the two things that move faster than your legs do: get timed properly, and get the run on film. A coach who can watch the race can see what the number cannot show them. If you are 14 or 15, the [100m progression by age tool](https://trackreels.io/progression/100m) shows what an 11.5 now is worth at 17 and 18 on the published WMA age curve.
